Taganrog is one of the most attractive cities in the Southern part of Russia. In spite of its location on the Cossack land, the culture of Don Cossacks has never been prevalent here. For decades of the Cold War it enjoyed the status of a ‘closed city’ due to its defense significance. But since the Iron Curtain fell, all its invaluable treasures are easily accessible to the visitors.  Taganrog was founded by Peter the Great in 1698 and sometimes is called ‘St. Petersburg of the Don’. Taganrog

Taganrog is one of the biggest cities in Rostov Region and of the South of Russia. It is situated in the South - East part of the Mius peninsula, jutting out into the Taganrog bay of the Azov sea; the old part of the city is situated on the cape Taganiy Rog approximately on the latitude of Paris and longitude of Moscow. The nearest city is Rostov-on-Don, at the distance of 70 km. The distance from the Ukrainian border is 50 km. In addition to the nearness to the Donetsk coal-field and the metallurgical base of the Ukraine it is necessary to mention the nearness to the Don, Kuban and Stavropol regions, - the granary of Russia. One should also point to the nearness to the Black and Azov sea resorts and Caucasus mineral waters. The population of the city consists of 277,3 thousands persons. People of about 90 nationalities live in Taganrog. The first mentioning of Taganrog was on the 12th of September 1698.
